FSIX New York

The Big Apple is where it all began, more than 25 years ago. A few friends on Wall Street, unable to be open about their sexual preference at work, started meeting for lunch to share support and camaraderie.  From there, a group formed, and regular meetings at the new Lesbian & Gay Community Center began.  

Following those formative years, the New York Bankers Group grew to encompass the rest of the city, having events in locations across town.  From corporate conference rooms, galleries, and fashionable venues up and down the island of Manhattan, LGBT professionals met, socialized and networked for more than a decade.  A safe space was carefully cultivated and maintained, a sanctuary for finance professionals still unable or uncomfortable being out in the workplace.

In 2003, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the New York Bankers Group, the Board and membership elected to rebrand itself as the Financial Services Industry Exchange, or FSIX.  This was done to reflect the growing complexity of financial markets and a global economy, already evident in the membership of the group.  By show of hands, only two or three of the almost 200 people present at the rebranding announcement considered themselves 'bankers' in the traditional sense of the word.  Nor was everyone from New York anymore, having changed and evolved with the times and needs of the market.  There was growing interest in an LGBT financial group in other cities, members were traveling more between cities and countries, and the organization wanted to expand and be more inclusive.

Los Angeles came online for FSIX in 2004, and Chicago followed in 2007.  Inquiries came in from other cities and countries, and the Board is now actively seeking other companies and individuals in financial services to help establish FSIX globally.
